A monument memorializing victims of genocide will be dedicated at Sonoma State University Sunday, March 29, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Erna and Arthur Salm Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Grove was designed and constructed by Jann Nunn, a sculptor and member of SSU's Art Department.
Built with private funds, in-kind contributions and proceeds from the sale of bricks inscribed with personal memorials, the monument is located at the edge of a campus pond north of the University Commons. The sculpture depicts railroad tracks crossing a foot path and converging at the granite base of a 12-foot glass tower illuminated at night by lights and the sun during the day.
Inscribed at the base are the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
The dedication will include speakers with expertise on genocides in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. Keynote speaker will be the Rwanda ambassador to the United Nations.
The program is open free to the public.
Sonoma State University is located at 1801 East Cotati Ave. in Rohnert Park.
